Rena Wakama, the trailblazing coach behind Nigeria’s D’Tigress historic AfroBasket titles and their unprecedented Olympic quarterfinal run, has been appointed head coach of Hive BC, a new franchise in the Unrivaled women’s 3-on-3 professional basketball league in the United States.
The announcement, made Thursday, marks a major milestone in Wakama’s fast-rising career. At 32, she transitions from her recent role as assistant coach with the WNBA’s Chicago Sky to leading Hive BC, one of two expansion teams joining the eight-club league for its second season in January 2026. She joins a coaching roster that includes former Seattle Storm head coach Noelle Quinn at Breeze BC and Roneeka Hodges of the New York Liberty at Phantom BC.
Unrivaled, co-founded in 2023 by WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, launched earlier this year with six teams and a unique format blending high-intensity half-court play with player equity stakes. The league has quickly attracted top-tier talent and attention for its innovative structure and competitive edge.
Wakama’s rise has been swift and impactful. After serving in collegiate roles at Manhattan College, Stony Brook, and Tulane, she took charge of Nigeria’s national team in June 2023. Her leadership delivered back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket championships and guided D’Tigress to Africa’s first-ever Olympic basketball quarterfinal appearance—men or women—at the Paris 2024 Games.
Her appointment has drawn praise across the basketball world. FIBA Africa’s Olurotimi Olagbegi called it “uncharted territory” for African coaches in elite U.S. setups, noting Wakama’s influence in reshaping global perceptions. Hive BC, unveiled in September, is banking on her blend of tactical acumen and developmental focus to build a competitive roster mixing WNBA veterans with emerging talent.
Speaking after the announcement, Wakama emphasized her commitment to building sustainable success. “It’s about empowerment,” she said. “Building teams that last beyond the buzzer.”
Her dual role—balancing national team duties with professional league responsibilities—presents logistical challenges, including travel demands and navigating a salary-capped environment. Yet her high-pressure style, honed against European powerhouses, aligns with Unrivaled’s fast-paced format.
